Derek Alpert began his leadership tenure as full-time President of Concern Foundation in September 2001. He began his association with Concern as a volunteer helping family friends set-up the organization’s annual Block Party on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.  He became actively involved in 1979 as one of the original founders of Concern 2, the “young adult” second generation of Concern. He served as the Concern 2 volunteer President for over 12 years.

Before taking on the role of full-time President at Concern, Derek had a very successful 25 plus year career as a music industry executive as Vice President of Motion Picture Music at Rondor Music Publishing the music publishing division of A&M Records.  His responsibilities included creative music licensing for films, television and advertising, placing catalogue and newly created songs on motion picture soundtracks, music supervision for films, overseeing the companies print music division (Almo Publications), overseeing the companies special events, creating catalogue packages and all advertising and marketing materials.

As president of Concern, Derek oversees all aspects of the organization with a staff of three fulltime employees.  His daily duties include fundraising and fund development, donor development, developing new business strategies and alliances, event organization and planning of all Concern events, “friend-raisers” and community outreach programs, developing and maintaining private and corporate business partnerships, and working with our Scientific Review Committee and Concern’s Finance, Oversight and Investments committees. He along with his staff develop in-house all marking materials, social media campaigns and continues to develop new fundraising events and to inspire a younger generations to get active and involved.

Aside from his work with Concern, Derek is a board member of several other non-profit organizations both within and outside the cancer community.  His board activities include active membership on the advisory councils of both the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases and the AYA@USC (Adolescent and Young Adult) Cancer Center, founding and current Executive Board member of Piece By Piece a social-enterprise and creative arts program in downtown LA’s Skid Row, Executive Board member and former volunteer President of Vital Options International, a psycho-social support organization for cancer patients, and an Executive Board member of the Medical Research Charities workplace and government giving program.  Derek is also a volunteer Santa during the holiday season at Children’s Hospital LA and at A Place Called Home in South Central LA.

Derek currently resides in the San Fernando Valley with his wife Julie of over 30 years and their dog Clark W. Griswold. Derek enjoys playing basketball, creating mosaic art, and spending as much time as possible with his three adult children (and son-in-law) and his two wonderful grandchildren.
